The John Deere 503 cutter does not have the front or rear safety chain that the newer 609 and 709 rotary cutters do. Instead, the 503 rotary cutter has a solid front and rear shield to prevent the blade from sending debris whipping out from under the main cutter housing. This rotary cutter relies on PTO that is unshielded. Never handle the rotating shaft during operation and ensure you turn off the PTO before leaving the tractor. Also, wait until the shaft has stopped rotating before servicing the cutter blade.
It can cause serious hand injury.
:: Author Message George D. Guest Posted: Wed Sep 15, 2010 9:36 pm Post subject: Newbie help: JD 503 Bush Hog I am completely new to this rig: An early-50's JD Model A with a JD 503 bush hog.
The problem: I can't seem to get the bush hog set up correctly, so that it is level when dropped into position. While using, the front of the bush hog drags and the sides dig in, leaving what look like small, parallel ruts in the ground. I have taken the top link of the three-point hitch up to its limit, but that doesn't help. The tail wheel barely touches the ground, if at all.
Can anyone point me in the direction of some set-up instructions for this implement? Thanks for any help you are able to provide - I hope to get this right so I can get the fields done before cold weather sets in. Another option is to put 2 chains between the liftarms and the lower mower/link pins so as to keep the mower 1' of the ground up front, and let the toplink out enough so the rear wheel can follow ground contours. I welded 2 curved skids under the mower side rails to prevent digging in JDseller Tractor Guru Joined: 09 Jul 2010 Posts: 4533 Location: North-East Iowa Posted: Thu Sep 16, 2010 12:23 am Post subject: Re: Newbie help: JD 503 Bush Hog The three point lift arms carry the front and hold the height.
The tail wheel carries the back. You want the mower to be running a little lower in the front. SO if you want to mow six inch's tall then set the front that high with the three point hitch control.
Then adjust the rear tail wheel up or down so it is running correctly. Then adjust the top link so it has some slack in it at the cutting position but will still lift the cutter high enough. If you have the top link too short every time the front wheels run in a hole it will jerk the tail wheel up and then slam it back down when the front wheel comes out of the hole. That will break the tail wheel. A John Deere 50 does not have the best three point hitch control. What I have done is run a short chain down from the top link pin on the tractor to the lower lift arm pin on the mower. You need one for each side.
Then just adjust the length of the chain to hold the hitch at the height you want. When you lift the chain will be loose and then stop the hitch from going too low when you let it back down.

It replaces your center link and has notches with a rod bent in about a 45% angle with a chain on both sides attached to frame of mower. Get mower to correct height in the frt and slide 45% rod to correct notch. Walla height is set.
Set angle of deck and tailwheel according to what JDseller stated and you'll be good to mow J Plunkett Guest Posted: Thu Sep 16, 2010 8:20 am Post subject: Re: Newbie help: JD 503 Bush Hog You need to make the top link longer and raise the 3 point to lift the front of the cutter. Perhaps the metal extensions are missing. As was said before, the bottom links establish the running height along with the rear wheel, with the toplink floating most of the time.
This prevents the tail from being jammed and bent as well as still allowing the toplink to pick it up. You have a John Deere 'A'. The three point hitch you have is either a JD 801 or an after market one. The JD 801 is a pain to use if you don't have all of the toplink assembly. If it is a after market one the top link is simpler but might not raise your rotary cutter correctly.
You will need some type of stop chains with the power trol system you more than likely have. MLD Guest Posted: Tue Sep 21, 2010 5:27 am Post subject: Re: Newbie help: JD 503 Bush Hog JD didn't have 'TRUE' 3 point hitch until the model 40, then on the 20 series & later tractors. Your A just has a lift system like our old B, it has NO depth control, just up & down. You need a chain or something to hold the arms at the desired height you need. Or go find a pull type bush hog. You won't have 'LIVE' pto neither, the pto will only engage with the hand cluth engaged.

You have there an old tractor with a newer mower, not the ideal outfit for mowing but it will work. IIRC you statement is correct only for tractors with a power-lift but the models with Power-trol could be stopped at any position although no depth control on either style Display posts from previous: - All times are GMT - 8 Hours Page 1 of 1 Jump to: Most of our stocked parts ship within 24 hours (M-Th). John Deere rotary cutters lead the way with innovative design, superior performance, and proven durability. Valuable features are included such as the Double-Deckerâ„¢ design and Max Flow cutting chamber, which prevent water and debris from accumulating on the smooth, dome-shaped top deck while the flat bottom deck absorbs the punishment from rocks and stumps. The top deck stays smooth - no dents, no dings, no holes. The internal supports sandwiched between the top and bottom decks are key to the smooth and structure-free Max Flow cutting chamber, while at the same time provide added strength and durability.
To help promote safe operation, John Deere rotary cutters are equipped with front and rear safety-chain shields. John Deere rotary cutters continue to advance in value with larger, more powerful gearboxes, redesigned blade holders, and updated constant-velocity (CV) drivelines (special to the flex-wing models). Here are situations when a rotary cutter is needed:. This kit is available for customers who want to convert from a Category 1 to a Category 2 hitch.
1) MX5 Single-Spindle Rotary Cutters are now being manufactured with holes in the mast plate to facilitate the conversion bracket, but for older MX5 Single-Spindle Rotary Cutters use the conversion bracket as template to drill a hole in the mast plate. A serial number break was not issued for the addition of the hole to the mast plate. 2) MX6 Single-Spindle Rotary Cutters prior to SN 11,001 were manufactured with Category 2 hitches and could not be converted to Category 1. MX6 Single-Spindle Rotary Cutters SN 11,001 and above are Category 1 and the conversion kit does apply.
